The theme of this Oconto High School program is "Racing for Education". We educate teens about problems with alcohol and other drug use; educate EVERYONE about the horrors of drinking and driving; and educate the general public that racing is NOT street racing. Student members are expected to attend and pass all classes and maintain acceptable behavior standards. Beat The Heat offers an alternative extra-curricular activity to traditional organized teams in high school in the form of race car construction/maintenance, community/charity involvement, drag racing and autocross racing.
The racing events we participate in require stringent safety inspections and mature operation of the race cars - no deviation from safety standards is tolerated. Handicap drag racing is a 1/4 or 1/8 mile straight line sport in which anyone who can drive can participate on a fair and equal basis with everyone else. This sport is also one in which women may participate and, indeed, excel in direct competition with men. Autocross is a timed event consisting of a course made out of traffic cones with penalties/disqualifications for hitting cones, missing turns, or going off-track.
